Day one: so far, ok. I didn't work out my health insurance, which will irritate my mother when she finds out, but there's always tomorrow (unless I get horribly injured some how.)

I agree with TW on earlier conference calls. I will also point out that we did it at that time because I wanted to hang out with Geoff Hoffman and some other people after Tom's play. I know sacrifices will have to be made and that's fine. I take the blame for the lateness of Saturday.

We should have insurance on that camera anyway. Fuck if UPS drops it, what if it gets stolen from us when we're illegally shooting on a roof somewhere. I'll talk to my daddy about how we should go about that. Also, considering I don't have health care right now, I am going to prioritize as earlier mentioned. The camera might wait a day or two.

I worked on a poster most of the day. There are a couple that are ok, but I like this one the best. We'll see what I can do as soon as Evan gets me some screen shots, or character pictures.

priorititties

I think I was probably a little misleading with my priorities Saturday night, unintentionally so. But I'm putting together my to-do list, and I thought this would be a good place for it, especially so that way everyone else could add things, provided I am able to help.

Tom's Priorities/List of To-Dos/job description

1. Make the group work correctly
This includes, but is not limited to:
a. Facilitating communication
b. Helping Evan figure out computer issue(s)
c. On-tasking people
d. Scheduling and making things like lists of priorities.
2. spangle poster
3. Web redesign
4. Final touches on presentation material for potential clients like: resume, about LESS, reel (incorporate with re-design), etc.
5. Find and prioritize grants
6. Eventual communication with clients
7. Secure Weddings to video
8. Investigate businessy type questions like: "How much do we have to make to ship the camera to Hawaii?"
Answer: It would cost about $250 to ship the camera and the case both ways. I'm not sure if that is the safest way to do it, but I did some estimates and that's what I came up with.

So, for $111.21, Derek and ana could have the camera in Hawaii two days after we ship it UPS, and get it all sandy. Depending on what the shoot was, and how much they would make from it, it may or may not be worth the cost. Of course, the key would be to line up a couple of things to shoot in a short span of time. Our profit margin is higher if Derek shoots three things for $300 each, and we only have ship the camera once - obviously.

The price did not include lights or sound equipment, but I understand Derek might have some resources on the island. I also calculated shipping with the US postal service. It was more expensive, but I think if we actually went to a post office we might find that the Internet over estimated the price.

Phone Conference Minutes

These are my notes from the conference. I was hastily jotting them down as we went, and I'm not spending too much time right now reorganizing them, so it may jump around. However, I will do my best to reflect accurately and orderly what was discussed.

1. Better Communication/Collaboration
-Don't just post for the sake of posting. Expect help, and give it in return.
-This also means not "pulling an Evan" and saying "I'm having problems with this, just so you all know." Clearly present the problems and thoughts so that others can contribute the way I finally did with my editing problems and Derek gave a lot of help. More of that.

2. PSA/Wedding Factions
-Work with what we have until we: a.) have adequate time/resources to make these right; and b.) have accomplished enough that a website will be a valid source of new business.
-We have leads on both PSAs and weddings, let's follow those and do them right first.

3. Website Design
-Everyone contribute. In the next couple of days, get any ideas you have up on this blog so we can start mixing, matching, picking and choosing.
-Get your ideas out in whatever level of detail you're capable of. Ana, for one, has the time and the competency to flesh out your design if you are short on one or both of those things (like me).
-EVERYBODY CONTRIBUTE, EVERYBODY HELP

4. Priorities
-It is, on many levels, a bad idea to try to come up with a detailed group priority list.
-In the next couple days, come up with your personal (and detailed) list of priorities. Put thought into this, not just so we all know what each other are up to, but also because it is surprising how much clarity one can find when they see their own priorities on paper.

5. Non-Profit Affiliation
-TW is (very appropriately) waiting for a completed Anne Grady project before discussing this with his dad.
-I'm going to hook my brother up with my roommate, Trevor, the Cleveland Non-Profit whore.

7. New Work
-We want as much as we can get, too much is a good problem.
-Let's be sure to finish the work we have before we worry about work we might be able to get.


The next phone conference will probably be Friday or Saturday. As a rule, they will happen at least once a week. Right now you should all be putting serious thought into: 1. design ideas; and 2. personal priorities. We need everyone to post both of these things in the next couple days. Design is the lesser concern, it's just important that if you do have something in mind you bring it up now because now is when people (TK/Ana) are working on that. Personal Priorities is non-negotiable.

so i spent a couple hours today on one idea that could go on the website. this is what i came up with..

Hillsdizzy

I'm pretty sure to fit all my stuff in my parents' mini-van is going to mean I have to drive with a pile of clothes on my lap.

Also, we should figure this Saturday thing out. The Saturday thing being a group meeting (Toms and Evan, maybe Justin in one room, Derek and Ana on phone). What time can everybody do it. I know TW has a play, I'm not sure what else is going on, but there has to be 30 minutes when we're all free.

Finally, I had a weird, sexual dream about Dawn Youngs. We didn't do it, because I woke up before the deed was thought. Frightening, for sure.

the deal with Oriki cosmetics is a no-go as the space he is allotted is far too small for any sort of in-house television system.

Derek spoke with Amira and they are working out problems with their lost files. they came up with a strategy and will be implementing that over the next few days.

Derek left a message for the PBS hawaii guy to watch "dionysus."

an email was sent to the independent lens lady to verify that she received "dionysus"

Derek has been working on putting together the dvd version of "dionysus" that will go to the guy who comissioned it.

a new non-profit has been reached and they wish to see a dvd of our previous work. they would be hiring us to make a PSA for their company...something along those lines. we met a kid out here who has done the non-profit thing previously and we're trying to get ahold of him for some information on how best to work this one. hopefully, evan sent out the tapes so that a reel can be put together.

the turtle island website guy called so we can begin moving forward in making a dvd for them. but now television networks need to be called so we can get copies of television shows eustace has been in since we don't think it wise for him to mail us the master tapes.

other opportunities are being pursued as well. these really should be discussed during the meeting on saturday. but there are some good things out there if we decide we want to take them.

turning wheels

OK, I did it. I'm done.

I've finished working in Hillsdale, and all I have to do is pack my remaining things and leave. Shit is about to happen in a major way.

With that in mind:

1. Derek I wish I understood your last post better. New conglomeration? Any ideas?

2. New computer system: We could buy the newest liquid for $200 because we have the older one. Evan's checking to see if that's the best option, otherwise maybe we should all chip into a new sweet-ass mac or something. Of course I'd hate to spend more money when we could get away with spending less.

3. Tom White and grad school:

Dear Tom White,

As far as everything goes with you being in New Jersey next year, congratulations and that's pretty cool. If you or I got this offer in '04, I would have been totally hyped about it, obviously.

I think the only reasonable thing I can say, is to see if you can defer a year. That might not seem that reasonable right now, but I promise the changes that happen with this group in a year will be significant and positive.

I don't feel comfortable really thinking about what will happen in 3.5 years, as far as where we'll be, how much money we'll be making and what kind of work we'll do, but I'm sure by fall '07 it will be clearer.

I promise, we will all have better careers than Jimmy Woodie, Adrienne Moon ... and generally 85 percent of people that graduate with MFAs, if we don't kill each other first.

And I'm sure you see yourself with a good career and a better chance at one after Rutgers. But I think I would be politely misleading you if I didn't mention this shit.

This is pretty general and very hypothetical, I know that. It is also inevitable that this group will succeed in major ways. I think you're valuable enough to LESS and it is to you to mention that taking what seems like a risk is probably a good idea.

a few little ones and one big one

So I can send you premiere Evan, it's a good program, it can do everything, etc. If you were to buy it it would cost a lot of money so that is an option, plus I know how to work it. My current system is working with Adobe Premiere, Adobe Encore (for burning dvds), and also a little Adobe Photoshop for making dvd menus which go seamlessly into encore. It's not all as theoretically easy as the Avid liquid should be but it's less demanding on your hardware which, as you predict the techies saying, is probably the biggest problem, especailly if you actually bought the legit program which is unheard of.

Also, in my trying to call everyone imaginable about everything I have spoken with a guy who sells Avid software and complete Avid systems etc. and if you call him and tell him I told you to call (probably won't remember me but still good) then he might tell you something while trying to sell you an avid system. You'll have to tell him you're on Oahu though.

This leads me to another thought. Evan has mentioned that he's thining about possibly buying a new system. This makes me think if Evan's gonna buy a new mac, maybe we should all just chip in and buy a huge awesome system that we can all use and will be sweet. Ana and I, of course and however, are not in the vacinity, and neither, apparently, will Tom W. be. So as Tom K. embarks upon a life outside of Hillsdale, maybe we should discuss some sort of better conglomeration...ness. I have no good solution for this and the idea has kinda been to just jet-set around and be sweet, so who knows.

evan...after having lived with Derek during his lifelong process of attemping to edit "dionysus, help me..." i am extremely sympathetic to what you are going through now. don't worry about the pictures. i am off until sunday and the designing might take a couple days anyway so focus on your issue and just get those to me whenever you have some downtime. also...with my recent hiring at apple computers, i became privy to various ways one can acquire a discount on their merchandise. if it comes down to it give me a call and i can give you a few options that might save you anywhere from fifteen to thirty percent depending. software as well but that discount might be more around fifty percent. all i am saying is that if it comes down to it i would at least like to assist in a monetary fashion by relievlng you of some of cost by way of a discount. Derek can send you premiere or you can send Derek the raw footage. these are other options.

today i worked and sold lots of foreign people ipods and sold a couple tools on the new macbook pro. i basically just learned how to bs my way through technology talk. and that f12 will give you the weather whenever you want it. i'm working on getting a zit and tomorrow i will begin work on a tenative submission for the redesigning of the website. that's all i got.

Buckle up

Before I pop the cap off this sumvabitch and let 'er flow, I have one special announcement:

Anna: I'm really sorry I haven't gotten you those pictures yet. It sounds like a hot idea and I want to facilitate it as best I can, but I guess I just don't have the "camera hookup" like I thought I might. I'm finally getting a friend to bring a camera over for me to borrow tonight, so I'll have the pics to you in a couple hours.

Moving along. What will follow is a very detailed description of the spot I'm in right now. If you don't find yourself wandering what I'm up to or why things are taking longer than expected, by all means stop now. It is my impression that people are wondering to some extent or other, so I'm gonna lay it down.

Part I. The Problems

The program I'm using to cut on, Pinnacle Liquid Edition 6, has been doing everything I want it to, I've gotten the hang of it, everything is great. Except exporting to file/burning to dvd/etc. I can make bad ass shit but I can't make it exist anywhere except on my computer, in Liquid Edition. The frustration up until now has been that I have to lower quality a lot of times or else the final product will be choppy or glitched in some way. I've gotten better at dealing with that. It's hardly perfect, but I can usually try a variety of things until something works. Again, I wish I could just hit the "Highest Quality Video, Go!" button, but at least I can get things done (it was a hard fight for the competency I have with exporting right now, this was the hold up on the trailer as well). The Anne Grady video presents some new problems. First of all, when I go under my handy-dandy export menu and choose Quicktime Video (hereafter, ".mov") the program immediately crashes and let's me hang out with my desktop background for as long as I'd like, so that's nice. I don't know how to approach making that work. I'd play with some options, except that would involve selecting that very first one of printing to .mov, which promptly ends that journey. I considered exporting to .avi and converting to .mov using some other software, but then we hit hurdle 2. Another problem with Anne Grady is its size in that it is significantly longer than the trailer (I know you immediately want to ask, "Then aren't we screwed when it comes to the movie which is way way longer?" but hold on, I'm getting there). Because the video is longer, it is more prone to f-ing up when I make even an .avi out of it, something that worked for the trailer. In fact, this becomes quite reminiscent of the initial problems I had and have now solved, but the longer the video, the harder to solve the problems. Often times I'll have to compress the video and use some codec to avoid glitchiness. So, I have eventually gotten this to work with the Anne Grady, but there has been a noticeable loss of quality, so I'm trying other things. This is a peek at the problems I'm dealing with.

Part II. Tech Support

Rather than try to solve all of this on my own, I consulted tech support to see if this might be common problems. Pinnacle apparently does not like answering the phone as evidenced by a handful of facts. First, they have a wide array of online help that you are encouraged to consult before calling. Second, it took me half an hour to actually get a phone number rather than a "did you try this first?" Third, you have to pay tech support $50 per question. Rather convenient when a lot of answers probably sound something like "get a faster processor." So scratch phone support. With the online support I did a number of things. I e-mailed a couple of question directly to the same tech support douche bags, so we'll see if they get back to those knowing that it is the venue they don't get paid for. They also have an epic forum that is posted on by both consumers and moderators (basically the same tech support people) where questions could be answered. I made a couple of posts there as well, and as far as I can see it, I kind of have to play the waiting game right now. In the meantime, I spent a couple hours reading through all of the forums to see if anyone else have ever had any of these problems or, as long as I was just waiting anyway, I was reading up as much as I could to improve my overall proficiency. I also spent a lot of time talking to Derek who had a number of interesting ideas that I also tried. They weren't useless, but none of them was "the solution" either. So, I wait. For either an e-mail response or a worthwhile post.

Part III. Anticipation

The best editing programs on the PC have long been Pinnacle Liquid and Avid. Get this... the newest program is Avid Liquid 7. That's right, the first indisposable editing software on the PC. So maybe I'll get that. After proving ownership of Liquid 6, it's only $200 to upgrade. The problem is of course that, the program is no doubt better, but not knowing the answer to my problems, it could be a better program plagued by the same issues, thus a waste of money. So I'm going to wait until I get some feedback before I make that move. Of course, if it looks like upgrading won't help that much and there aren't any good solutions to the problems, we're boned. Anne Grady will become very difficult to present at the quality I want it at, the movie will be impossible. That is why I also have to wait to see what kind of feedback I get, because if this problem can't be fixed, I have to buy a Mac and Final Cut. Kinda really sucks, but the next couple days will determine whether it is necessary.

Part IV. Conclusion

I'm stuck waiting what may be a day or two for the answers I need, and that sucks. In the meantime, at the end of this period of time, the answer will be clear, and there will be no more waiting. So the end of this waiting will reveal what is going to work (and notice I don't say the more common "which way is best" because best isn't the question, it has to be perfect quality, the only question is the price).

I think that about somes it up. Sorry it was so long, but now there shouldn't be many questions as to "where I'm at" with this stuff.

There's a lot I should address, but I'm tired and I'll do that tomorrow. I'm having serious problems exporting the Anne Grady video. The biggest inconvenience is that every failed attempt involves about an hour and a half to two hours of waiting to see what will go wrong. I'm in contact with tech support via e-mail and will be talking to them on the phone during the day. Whenever I wake up I'll go into more detail on more of the issues, but I thought this might be the thing people are thinking about the most. Sorry it's taking so long to get out, but I PROMISE I'm more frustrated than you are (that "you" is directed to everyone individually, think about your own personal frustrations and then realize mine are worse). Again, I'll have more in the morning (mid-afternoon).

Well today I've been trying to recover deleted files relating to the documentary. Ana and I also finished a proposal to get a garden in our complex. This may not seem related but it's one step closer to relationships with non-profits, etc.

please post. Please, please post. This is the last time I ask nice, because this is the last time I'm too overworked to call or complain to all of you. I don't want to explain why I'm tired, or why I worked hard on bull shit Hillsdale crap today. I just want everybody to post.

As far as work on LESS is concerned, I haven't got much news. I may have made some connections if we want to show the movie in Hillsdale and I may have made some Hillsdale connections in LA. I'll find more out about that tomorrow. But now I have to work.

London's Burning

I've been staring at this blank page for a while and I'm not sure what to say. So here's this:

1. Right now we are in a preparation phase.
We have to get our materials ready and at their highest level of badassery so we can approach the most clients later. We need to totally revamp the web page, get everything we need on the trailer, and make sure we have good paper copy to include in packages to clients.
Everyone is working on these things in different ways, and we need daily updates on the blog to let the others know where we are at and what we are doing specifically.

2. Look at this web page. This guy is from Detroit and is using MySpace to promote his projects. He is talking with MTV about doing a show.

We are so much better than this.

I believe in this group, and I believe we are extraordinary.
Everyone even tangentially involved with LESS has to know we are elite for what we are doing. We just have to continually do the little things that keep us preforming at a high level. We are each capable of great things, together we could be so fucking good.
Stick to it.

i am attempting to assist in the redesign of the website. this is why i am asking for pictures. it has something to do with the redesigning of the website...which is forward progress. it is the thing that i am currently working on for LESS productions. so please send me the pictures. i will redesign even if you can't get around to it but i know it will look better if i have more material from which to choose. what are you doing.

Chip and HillsDale

I put my two weeks notice in yesterday.

It was pretty dramatic and everything, but not in the sense I thought it would be. I talked to the publisher for a while and since my Editor, the fat-ass shithead, has been avoiding me, which is fine.

I have more inspiration to come, but I have to finish this work so I can really make the fuckers feel bad.

Spangle Trailer

Hey just some quick comments for evan on the trailer cuz I just watched it again so I'll post while it's fresh. One very specific thing would be to make the beginning part faster before we see Justin say the thing about the business which gives us something to latch onto plotwise. And just cut as close as possible before and after relevant diologue like when (i forget his name I'm sorry) is talking on the phone, cut out the pause, we've got no room for dramatic pauses in life let alone a trailer. Make sense? I like those other shots before Justin's first appearance but maybe make them quicker and put them after there is some explanation. Please tell me what to do about my trailer because I've got to make a slightly longer and much better one. Mahalo!

so as i worked on the website resume [which stands at version 2.0 currently], i had other thoughts on design related things that i feel i would be capable of producing for the website. now these are just ideas and i would like them discussed but i ask that any discussion happen as a comment to this post so that the discussion is kept in some sort of orderly fashion. i would like to alter the fish. i propose that when someone type in the web address or end up at the website, the first thing they see is a mosaic type quilt fashioned out of various pictures of various parts of our body. hands, eyes, mouths, feet...all very PG and artistic. i feel like it speaks of our generation and our blogging and journaling and tendancy to overexpose. we are giving them something that most websites don't immediately. the viewer would then scroll their mouse over the mosaic box which would, using flash animation, swipe from one side to the other and would reveal a picture of all of the people that were featured in the mosaic standing together. if i could get pictures of everyone, the right pictures at the right distances and the right body parts...i feel i could definitely photoshop all of this stuff into reality. putting it onto the website would not fall under my jurisdiction as i have only html design knowledge. since we all agree on making the website better, what's say instead of us each designing our own thing...we discuss here the potential of the website, the direction in which we'd like it to go, how we can get it in that direction, and so on.

I do it for the Karma

Ok so I am self aware I think (ha). Many say too much so. So I can say that I've been working, because I can say when I havn't. Anyway I furiously put that damn reel together and Evan put a lot of work into his end and I will say that we did not get the Blueprint For Change job. She said some things about the production value not looking good enough. After a day to digest it, I can say, well, she's right. The stuff was either shot on a DV camera or on a poor format of windows media or something. Anyway, I still thought it was good and the PSA stuff that evan did was damn near perfect for what they wanted. The culprit may have been my overly jazzy intro piece. Regardless, I think I will call her back tomorrow and ask for further feedback although I am a bit scared to do so. The point is though, that an opportunity came along that I wasn't prepared for but didn't want to pass up for lack of effort. So we rose to the occassion and put something out there albeit not fully sweet enough.

Later, while discussing websitage with Nick Vidovich, I came to the conclusion that we may be trying to do too much that we can't do well. I tried to make an overly jazzy, flashy intro, and we may not have had the stuff to back up such jazz, the proper amp may perhaps fit this analogy. This ties to the website in that we could make some crazy animationy website or just keep it clean and simple. Here is a link to my aunt and uncle's website. So, I think we should take a group look at the reel we have currently and try to make it better. Evan, do you have the documentary that you won money for? and can you send me full resolution copies of other stuff, snail mail is completely fine because as Tom said, yes, we will be prepared for the next time.

In all of our creativity we can become frantic and we need to periodically re-center as this mission statement talk is trying to get at. Damn we need a conference or retreat or something.
Well basically I'm still just trying to do anything sweet. Maybe y'all can post anything you have that is sweet that we can put into a very general portfolio that we can pick from when a potential opportunity arises, be it a gallery instalation, book publication, wedding video, etc etc.

I am going to meet with a shady character tomorrow who says he has the hook ups with a new studio, but I just found out who they are and I applied to work for them on several endeavors and they also seem a little iffy, so we'll see. So I just keep doin shit.

Oh and we mailed out an application to ITVS which is a funding branch for independent lens and I made way too many copies of everything. And I gave a copy of Dionysus to PBS hawaii.

Mission statement Idea: Completely open to anything awesome that will make us some money so we can do even more awesome things and not have to worry about it...and then still get some money for it...but not care.

Idea of the hour was to get a gallery installation of some sort. I saw a mediocre painting the other day at this trying to be hip, warehouse style space/bar that sold for 7 grand. Does anyone have visual art stuff already done that we could put into a portfolio.

I guess this all boils down to having a very diverse portfolio that just says "hey, we're awesome and we can do anything awesomely." This begins and ends largely in the website. That's something that we claim to design, and something that will house other things that we design.

because the man next to me on the bus did...and he wanted to take me with him. so the reel has been turned into the blueprint for change. i will call monday to follow up and make sure it was received and if there may be any further information that we can supply them with. i don't have any specifics in regards to this jobs...numbers and the like. i just know that they did say that the deal would include multiple thousands of dollars in compensation. and there would be travel to other islands as well. the thing with the spangle trailer, what i meant by "we couldn't get it to work," was the audio. it was out of synch from the get go...not a horrible amount...but enough to make us look less than professional. i know that i don't call people and part of it is because of the time difference and because most of the days, all i would have to say is that i did laundry, logged some hours on some less related piece of work but got little accomplished, spent many hours trying to find a job, and went to the beach. it would be redundant and i don't feel that anyone wants to talk to me anyways. that said, if this is what is wanted in order to better the group then fine. i'm in.

Damn it. I think regular blogging and phoning is good for the group even if it's just to talk about how eating too many peanuts might make you poop weird.

Plus is takes less pressure of me personally (not pooping) but then I don't feel like we're coming from totally different places when it's actually time to get something done.

So please, pretty please clean the fucking car.

Derek and i have spent the last few days holed up in our bedroom...hunched over the computer editing the LESS reel to turn into Blueprint for Change. the reel consists of short introduction of shots mixed with geffro music, then a menu, then the three selections for the organization to watch followed by a button that leads them to a screen with our contact information. included are scenes from Dionysus, help me...big brother psa...and domestic violence psa. we would have included spangle but we couldn't get the damn thing to work properly. since i cannot post the actual footage that we put together and included




























here is the menu. now spangle is no longer on the reel so just imagine it with the three buttons as opposed to four and new button on the right hand bottom corner that reads "contact". you get the idea. i will whip up some business cards tomorrow and drop off this reel. i'm going to put in some work on the collective resume and will have that to nick by saturday, if anyone has not sent me their submissions yet...now would be a good time. mariana.majer@gmail.com . or just post 'em. that's all i got.
